September 8. San Francisco Bay Chronicle article. Kurtis Alexander reporting/ California becomes first state to test drinking water for microplastics

Jessica Clay, a student volunteer from Cal State Long Beach, works with a water sample from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean. State water regulators plan to begin testing for plastics in drinking water next year.

Microplastics are everywhere. The tiny particles that shed from clothing, food packaging and tires linger in the air, the soil, the ocean and, almost certainly, your drinking water. On Wednesday, California became the first place in the nation, and perhaps the world, to begin requiring water agencies to test for the contaminant. State water regulators, after years of working with more than 20 labs in seven countries to pioneer a means of monitoring microplastics, adopted new testing and reporting requirements that will take effect next year.

THE MOORE INSTITUTE RESEARCH FOR PLASTIC POLLUTION WEBSITE IS NOW LIVE!

Press Release Announcement . This is a new field of study in the minute particle realm—Micro & Nano plastics. After years of educating and warning about the dangers of a “plastic plague”, it became abundantly clear we had failed to stop this insidious pollutant. In 2019, studies on the complexity of drinking water analysis techniques were begun by a group of 34 laboratories, including Algalita.  The complexity of both equipment and techniques necessary for this methods evaluation study revealed the necessity for establishing a new organization focusing solely on nanoplastics.  Thus, The Moore Institute was founded.
